NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Japanese electronics giant Sony may cut the price of its PlayStation 3 by $100 worldwide in October, according to an analyst with Goldman Sachs.

Yuji Fujimori wrote in a note Tuesday that lowering the cost of the game console, which competes with Microsoft's (Charts) XBox 360 and Nintendo's (Charts) Wii, will not undermine the unit's long-term profitability.

The PS3, criticized by consumers and industry watchers for its high price, can cost up to $700, although the basic model retails for $499.

"The PS3 price has long been cited as high," Fujimori wrote, noting that cutting the price of game consoles has historically quadrupled volumes.

Fujimori sees simplification of design aiding PS3's profitability as well, noting Sony's (Charts) original PS began with 700 components and concluded with 200, while the PS2 started with 2,000 parts and finished with 600. The PS3 prototype had 4,000 components but now a shift to around 2,000 is in the pipeline.

Earlier in March, press reports in Japan said Sony is planning to introduce cheaper microprocessor chips for its PS3 to help bring down the price.

It will have to drop to the same price as the cheaper 360, before I would buy a PS3.

This would mean that Sony would lose more on each system sold but it could be the right move to increase sales. However, if they drop their price it is likely MS and Nintendo will do the same

I'll pay $500-600 for a video game entertainment system when it entertains me even if I just sit on my couch and do nothing.

Prices always start out insanely high, because there are always the crazies that'll buy it and give the largest profits. Then when they lower the price, it makes it seem like the PS3 is sooo much cheaper, when in reality it didn't even cost Sony $300 to make the system, so even that is profit. But by starting the price super high, and then "lowering" it to what they originally had in mind, they get more profit.

there are so many good games coming out for PS3 that I almost bought one the other day...T__T I don't want to spend that much right now though lol. I can wait for a price cut. $100 price cut is better than the origianl price :p

Soul Calibur was on the xbox but as for a new version nothing has been confirmed. There was an article that said Namco was considering how they would bring Soul Calibur to the Wii but didn't mention 360. Devil May Cry 4 has been confirmed for the 360

I think they said that to motivate people to buy a ps3 but it is going to be on 360.

Speaking of SSBB i saw an article that said there will about 40 characters, all different with different abilities not like eg Fox and Falco from the previous game. They will be removing Mr. Game and Watch and Ice Climbers, said something about Pit being the only old school Nintendo character.

but 40 characters from different franchises plus online battle...this game is going to own

where I'm at, if you turn in a ps2, that's a $100 dollars towards a ps3. So, you can turn in 3 ps2s and get $300 off and plus a price cut.... sounds good to me XD

Yeah, a few stores here do that too; you turn in a game/controller/console and you get store credit.
