Microsoft Gives Sony Cold Shoulder

No talks for Xbox 360 Blu-ray, claims MS product manager.

by Martin Robinson (http://xbox360.ign.com/email.html), IGN UK

UK, March 13, 2008 - Microsoft has played down reports that it's currently in talks with Sony regarding the incorporation of Blu-ray technology into its Xbox 360, implying it's future focus will be trained on downloadable content.

Following the demise of Toshiba's HD DVD format last month, speculation mounted that Microsoft could be forced to work with Sony, appropriating Blu-ray technology for its console. However, speaking to Reuters, Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg confirmed, "Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience."

Greenberg asserted that, "We're the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content," suggesting Microsoft plans to place further emphasis on its Xbox 360 Live Marketplace service which already has support from several major film studios, including Paramount and Warner BrosWell I think A Blu-Ray add-on would have helped Microsoft out a lot, I mean people could watch Blu-Ray on the 360, plus keep the HD-DVD's they have to watch also on the HD-DVD add-on.

Well personally I think this entire HD DVD and Blu-ray DVD "higher quality" is bullshit... I have a Blu-ray Spiderman movie, and the regular DVD of it and I cannot tell a single difference when I play them on my widescreen TV. I think it's all a scam :p

Plus the price of it would skyrocket if it could play HD DVDs and Blu-ray DVDs and play video games and music and use the internet and...

Well unless u are a Quality freak like some ppl, having the option to play both Blu-Ray and HD DVDs on your Xbox360 really IMO does give the 360 an edge.

Regarding an increase in price of the console....if MS just made Blue-ray an add-on like HD DVD players then it wouldn't really affect the 360's price since PPL CAN CHOSE whether to add-on the Blu-Ray player + I see 360/PS3/Wii as a source of entertainment so if u enjoy having best of both worlds(HD DVD & Blu-Ray) forking extra $$$ wouldn't really exactly matter.

Tell me how Blu-ray is better. Seriously. "The best of both worlds"? It's barely better than watching a DVD on a regular TV..

When I meant ''best of both worlds''...it referred to the amount of HD DVDs that 1 has collected over the yrs and some being old movies which may not be re-released in Blu-Ray.

Regarding the quality between Blu-Ray and HD dvd IMO it's like an individual opinion since u may not be able to tell the difference but others can like I mentioned earlier-Quality Freaks(no offense to them). It's like the debate over H264 encoded into MKV vs AVI format some ppl in other forums said there was no notable difference between those 2 to them but others said otherwise.

Overall regarding if Blu-ray ever becomes part of the Xbox360 console or as an add-on it's ultimately up to the ppl/customer who can tell the quality between those 2 formats for their entertainment.

o.0 well it's an individual opinion regarding quality. I would kill to get a PS3 right just for the sake of the games+Blu-Ray player for my HDTV alas broke.....>.<

In regards of quality, doesn't it depend on how the video is encoded. I think Blu-Ray's biggest advantage is size.

You can't reallt beat that awesome 50GB storage capacity. Movies and games would only get bigger (Id' Rage demo packed over 50GB of texture files alone) so more space is needed, despite all the nifty compression technique being developed.

Moreover, as HD-DVD has thrown in the towel, Blu-Ray has all the time it needs to develop. btw, even though 360's online service is robust, most people still get their games the old fashion way, through discs purchase.

Not including the Blu-Ray add-on means that developer have to limit the size of their games, make on multiple DVDs, or release it on the near-defunct HD-DVD format.

dvds are still the best to go for movies. blu-ray and hd-dvd requires lots of extra money just for some "quality picture" I really don't see any difference in picture quality when i put my dvd in the 360 with component cables connected to a CRT Flat Screen.

It doesn't really matter, as videos with higher quality will need more space, and that's where Blu-Ray comes in.

A HD-encoded movie can take up a lot of space, but it also depends on how the movie is filmed. Spiderman-3 used a HD-camera, I think, as its the first time such technology is used in the series.

But, it still doesn't produce that much difference in quality, yet. When you buy Blu-Ray, you're paying for capacity, not quality.
