I hope you enjoy, this is my first actual story...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ever notice how a deer looks at the headlights of a car? Unlike popular theory, it's not because the deer is facinated by the light, it is because it is paralyzed with the fear of rushing death. Seeing death rush before your eyes would paralyze you too. The deer knows it's going to die, going to be in the world of the nonliving, but it stares at the car, as if challenging death to see if it will actually kill the deer. This is exactly how Demius lives, this is his story.
Demius loved to sit in his favorite bar, drinking his favorite drink, and listening to his favorite song on the radio. Demius loved to be a normal man, living out his life with a normal day job. Nothing could ever prepare him for what happend.
One day, a strange man walked into his bar, well, not really walked, more like "wheeled". He never gave out his name, but ordered a strange drink and went to sit with Demius. This is the day when Demius' life was changed.
"Hello, Demius," said the man in the wheelchair, with a raspy cold voice. "I have heard much about you, and I know more about you than many do ."
"What do you mean old man?" said Demius.
"I mean about your past, Demius. What did you used to be called? Ahh yes, the Death Jester, dealing out death like it was a card game. The one specific thing that I remember about you is that you always left a joker card on the body of your victim. Clever."
"Listen, old man, I don't know what you're talking about, so leave me alone."
"Oh, but you do, Demius. I have come here to offer you a job quite out of the ordinary. I need you to take up your trade one more time. I will pay you good, you can be quite sure of that. I need to envoke the mighty powers of the Death Jester unto my enemy. Will you heed my request"
Demius stares into space for a moment, having a mental war about what he should do. Finally he decides.
"Fine, old man, what is the amount?"
The cloaked old man could not be seen smiling, but he was. "Twenty thousand gil up-front. Plus lodgings, tools, travel money, whatever you need free of charge. If you get the deal done quickly, I will give you another ten thousand gil, as a bonus.
"Alright, old man, give me the name and whereabouts of the person"
The man in the wheelchair writes down all the information.
"I won't need any travel money or tool or lodgings, this place is close,"said Demius. "He will be dead in twenty-four hours."
~*~Three Hours Later~*~
Demius is on the roof of an old warehouse, creeping silently to the huge sunwindow to peer in. He hears voices inside. He immediately recognizes one as the target, Boss Hajima of the local underground.
"Hey, Boss, where do you want these crates?" said one thug.
"Over there, you fool. I've already told you a million times." said Boss Hajima.
"Sorry, Boss"
Demius locates the fusebox and switches out all the lights.
Alarmed, Boss Hajima shouts, "Hey, what's goin' on here?! Dennis, Yoko, Tetsua, Steve, arm yourselves quickly."
Sounds of the loading and the arming of weapons can be heard from inside. Demius quietly makes a hole in the big sunwindow and jumps down, making no sounds. He quietly unsheathes his ledgendary katana and kills all of the thugs, leaving Hajima on his own.
Hajima hears the sound of his men hitting the floor all around him. He wonders if this is his payment for the sins he has committed. The lights come on all around him.He sees Demius in front of him, and the last thing he ever saw was a swinging katana coming directly at his head.
Demius leaves his trademark joker cards on each of the bodies and leaves, truely thrilled by the slaying that had gone on that night. He goes to see the old man once again.
~*~Around 9-10 hours later~*~
"Ahh, Demius, I hear about the Hajima Murder, very sad indeed. You did a good job," says the wheelchair man.
"Thank you, I would like to know if there are any more jobs available for me," replies Demius.
"Not now, but maybe later. Here is your money. I will let you know about any more jobs in the future. I am glad i re-kindered your love for the hunt. Leave now, I must rest."
"Old man, one more thing."
"Yes?"
"What is your name?"
"I shall leave that for a later time."
Ever notice how a deer looks at the headlights of a car? Unlike popular theory, it's not because the deer is facinated by the light, it is because it is paralyzed with the fear of rushing death. Demius is that car and no one ever survives.
