Why is it that people act like children in the social aspect of games?

I think this is really stupid. I understand that people on games can be any age and shit, but why the fuck do they have to act like they are all morons? I had these two children, 18 and 14 (and I am almost 19 by the way, and my claim is still valid), who wouldn't stfu about stupid shit. Is there something inherent in games that make people behave as if brain-dead?

The provided log was taken from a bot (stealthbot) that was connected to battle.net. All the participants of that conversation are effectively anonymous in terms of their out-of-game information Matt.


Well, kids are kids, but I find that absolutely pathetic. The second I joined the game (sniper 316) and it started they said 'only 1 es?' (my accountname is ES-Hellspire) and I jestily said "one should be enough." They of course have to continue being bastards and hell I really cant concentrate with people saying shit like "I'm bored / I'm about to fall asleep / lol," etc with all those stupid comments to each good thing for them. I somewhere in the middle of it told them to grow the fuck up, but kids get angry too easy. The convo I provided is the aftermath as stated.

To give everybody some background:
-Hellspire and I belong to Clan Elite Snipers (ES), a StarCraft sniper clan that a couple years ago was THE BEST sniper clan on all of Battle.net. In recent months we haven't been able to hold up to that reputation, and consequently everybody and their mother's second cousin thinks we're pure nub.
-Snipers is a custom map that requires a lot of strategy, a decent portion of luck, and a lot of dedication and teamwork. Most games that are like that end up with some amount of shit talk in them somewhere (ever played Halo online?).
-The only ways to get people like Killers to shut up are
A: Ban them (proves them correct in their eyes)
B: Play InsultWars (I'm good at it, and if your insults are good enough, they lose face, no matter what they say)
C: Ignore (Best strategy if you want to be Mature about it)

Games bring out the worst competitive feelings in everybody. In addition to just the game itself and the conflict there, some idiot had to come up with the nice idea of ingame chat/chat lobbies. Voila, the art of shit talk is born. It has the same intended effect of propaganda: make you look good while the one you're targetting looks bad. Basic human impulse.

Maturity is the ability to take your impulses and evaluate them, and in most cases, refrain from following the impulse at all. In most cases, shutting up or ignoring is a more mature, and ultimately more worth it, course of action.

Very good first post Tack. While the competitive nature of most living things is a necessary evil, it almost always leads to the situations we see here. I strongly doubt anything "mature" will be done to rectify this on Battle.net or most other popular networks. Action against this sort of behavior is only shown in games intended for children. What does this tell us? Kids... don't play games unless you know how to curse or are immune against it! It's a cruel gaming world. Heh.
