Nintendo Pulls Plug On Zelda Fan Film

"Would ya kindly take that down?"

January 4, 2010 - A fan-made Zelda movie has now been shelved courtesy of Nintendo (http://games.ign.com/objects/025/025047.html).

Dubbed The Hero of Time (http://www.theherooftime.com/), this feature-length project took over four years to produce, and was finally made available online to view for all at DailyMotion.com late last month.

It didn't take long for Nintendo to take notice, however, as the company asked for the film to be taken down only two weeks after its internet debut.

"We came to an agreement with Nintendo earlier this month to stop distributing the film," the statement reads (http://www.theherooftime.com/2009/12/the-hero-of-time-update-01-01-10/) on the creator's website. "In the spirit of the holiday season they were good enough to let us keep the movie up for you to watch and enjoy through the end of 2009, but not past 2009."

"We understand Nintendo's right to protect its characters and trademarks and understand how in order to keep their property unspoiled by fan's interpretation of the franchise, Nintendo needs to protect itself — even from fan-works with good intentions."

Pieces of the film still appear on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EyLkDG2P_Y), however. The company certainly has rights to protect its property, but did they go too far? Should they have been more lenient?I wish I could have watched it

I don't feel any sympathy for the fans. I'd say that this is something they should have anticipated, presuming that they're the most hardcore of fans..

I'll just paste the comment I left on the youtube clip of the first part of the movie:

So Nintendo is evil for wanting a crappy movie of their product removed? I've been trying to get a friend of mine to play Zelda for ages, I got him to watch this movie 2 weeks ago with me and it made him want to play Zelda even less. It's only "free advertising" (as some of you are calling it) if it's GOOD.

And it's true that they spent over 4 years on this, and it stinks to have it taken down. But it also stinks that they had over 4 years to ask Nintendo for permission, and didn't.

They did the beginning well, but that was already directed for them by Nintendo. Other than that, it...isn't pretty.

The Legend of Zelda: The Parody of Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDgighw4K1A) was so much better. And it was made by high school kids.
