This week's issue of Famitsu magazine contains a few more details on Torne, the new PS3 digital receiver and video recorder (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3177662#) that Sony first announced in Japan last week. As SCE hardware planner Kiyoto Shibuya put it, the concept of the Torne from the start was to create a truly PS3-like DVR. "Devices like these tend to be these complex multipurpose things, but a lot of sets are just too multipurpose for their own good," he said. "We built this from the ground up to be a uniquely PlayStation product, and I think the results show that limiting your feature set can be a good thing."
Along those lines, the Torne has a great deal of what Shibuya termed "game-like features." It's fully PSP compatible, for example -- you can use the portable as a fancy remote control, or you can bring recordings over to the PSP for portable viewing, Even more surprising is a passing references to trophies Shibuya made in the interview: "It's compatible with the PS3 trophy system, and you can get trophies for things like watching final episodes from a lot of TV series, for example." One wonders about the other trophies that might be available. Watching 1000 hours of anime, maybe?
The Torne comes out next month in Japan for 9980 yen; there's also a 42,800-yen model that comes with an external 250-gigabyte (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3177662#) hard drive for recording. "In my eyes, it'd be a great if this became a way to convince your wife to buy a PS3," Shibuya joked at the end. "If she says 'no game systems,' just tell her that it's for video recording. We'd all be very happy if it worked out that way."
That sounds like it would be cool.
