The problem with me starting gfx is, that I may get soo carried away that I may forget about my coding and junkz.

Dude you have Photoshop, search for a begginers tutorial. It's simple colouring. God, why don't you make a new layer and fill it with red. Then in the blending options choose what you want, most likely colour.
