Hey, everybody, read this, from todays' San Jose Mercury News :

Judge halts law barring violent video game sales

A federal judge in Detroit issued a preliminary injunction Wednesday blocking a Michigan law that bars retailers from selling or renting violent video games to minors from going into effect until a lawsuit filed by the gaming industry is resolved.

The Entertainment Software Association, a trade group representing U.S. computer and video game publishers, filed the suit in September, charging that the law is unconstitutionally vague and limits First Amendment rights.

In his order, U.S. District Judge George Steeh said Michigan officials are not likely to win the case, and that the ``loss of First Amendment freedoms, for even minimal periods of time, unquestionably constitutes irreparable injury.''

Alot of you might have heard of AB1179 that California Gov. Arnold Schwarzennegger passed back in early October. Discuss it here. (http://forums.otakuworks.com/showthread.php?t=6403) Anyway you people in Michigan are so lucky. I'm sure the youngest people who use these forums are like, say, 14 or 15, so you can STILL get you (or your lucky friends) "Grand Theft Auto" for Christmas. For me, an unlucky Californian sufferring the evil of the Governator, I have 'til Jan. 1, 2006 to get myself an M-rated game. Or else I gotta wait two years just to play all those M-rated games. Anyone who lives in Michigan, cheer!

BTW, i used to live in Michigan, until i moved out when i was six.

Yeah, I forgot, the video gaming industry also went against California and Arnold Schwarzenegger for AB1179 too. Arnold set the effect date for the bill to 1/1/2006 so that the industry could express their oppositions. So far, I've only heard the industry's p-ed off but no court order blocking AB1179. Sheesh, why didn't they go sue for California's law yet they sued for michigan's law?

And i've heard that Detroit has a pretty high crime rate, possibly fueled by those "Grand Theft Auto" and "Postal" type games. I really think an AB1179-type law in Michigan could help decrease--but not diminish--Detroit's crime rate. Right?

I don't think so. Video games aren't a major cause for violence.
