This doesn't go directed to the forum, if you are thinking about that. It is spreads widely through various forums, blogs (such as LJ), chat-rooms and the so. But this problem seems to be bigger in many forums.

This is often called "Internet Idiocy".

I'll start by quoting:

I'd like to chalk it up to the fact that the average net user's attention span lasts all of two seconds butr the fact is that people just plain suck. They don't want to have to actually think about anything and they want much less to see that others are actually thinking. They believe that the web is one giant amusement arcade here to entertaim them. That's why forums tend to turn elitist in one way or another. No, it's not very nice but it is something of a way for the place to protect itself from falling into that downward spiral.

Whenever I try to point this up, I end up insulted by the people against or plain be called "basher".

"It's too bad stupidity isn't painful" ~Anton LaVey

Even if it was debilitatiingly painful, it wouldn't stop them. Occasionally I think it's some form of a twisted Pavlovian response: Once they're online, the reasoning & language centers of the brain shut down.

Just because someone isn't physically able to stop them from being complete assholes doesn't give them the right to be complete assholes.

And they won't accept it when you tell them. They would probably reply with "whatever" or "i don care", which are the replies I get the most, now. It *is* the kind of people that I tend to ignore. One of the two is required for me to talk to them (reasoning or language); if one of them is missing, it means "goodbye".

So this is here to discuss online immaturity/idiocy.

I do not want insults, insolence, impertinence or complaints. It is a delicate subject, where many insults and bashes can take place. I do not want any of these. If I see any, I will make sure to delete it.

It's just so easy to be an online idiot. The internet provides anonymity to those who do not want to take ownership of their words. It's a perfect hit and run medium. Of course, online immaturity is also an indication of real life immaturity, just augmented because the social barriers that exist in real life have been stripped off.

Another thing is, the effect when you post and when you speak in real life (IRL) is rather different. If you said something stupid IRL, your friends would either ignore you or bash you up and forget about it. If someone posted something stupid in the forum though, it's hung up there in black and white for all to see, and react to for as long as the thread is active. And so, the effects are far more, um, noticeable than idiocy IRL; thus, internet idiocy.

I suppose the purpose of this thread is to discuss solutions? Or is it mainly to bash online idiots? ;)

I have seen forums that are very well moderated. Some may call it elitist (it's always the troublemakers or trolls who do so anyway), but it makes the place a safe haven for those who actually want to discuss relevant matters. No harsh words or bashing there either. I was impressed.

Even so, you still can't stop immatured people from spamming. How would you react to pointless posts that go "I'm sorry I haven't watched it yet" in an anime thread? There's no point reacting cos it is highly doubtful that the poster would ever come back to the thread, and you can't ban a person based on that...

who cares. its the internet. get over it because nobody cares about your judgement.

besides some of you try to act too mature sometimes. loosen up. nobody wants to be serious all the time.

besides, i'm sure half of the people who act so 'mature' in the internet don't act like that in real life. frankly, they'd be some of those boring people ever. some of us just actually type the way we talk.

Yume, indeed. That's what I mean.

Actually, I was originally going to rant, but ended up leaving it as an open discussion. XD

I often question whether there is any difference, but on the whole I believe immaturity is often a self-inflicted disease =\

I would say it expands wider than any disease.

Ah, how lucky. This part of his post is a perfect example of what I say.

besides some of you try to act too mature sometimes. loosen up. nobody wants to be serious all the time.

There's a line between being funny and being an idiot. Being funny - yes. Being a moron - no.

besides, i'm sure half of the people who act so 'mature' in the internet don't act like that in real life.

Then again, that's just an assumption.

No, I'm trying to act as if I hate morons. Oh, but wait, I do. :D

(ah, and before you even think of it, I'm not refering to you as one)

But, you are getting this wrong. It's not about using fancy words and fighting to see who has more wit; it's against n00bism. Let me link you:

Dude, just amazing. XD

Ditto. I dont think too many people are out to impress when they sign on a computer. It's their chance to be a different person :P But yeah, it can be taken too far, like you said, for comdeic purposed it's alright but not just for the sake of being a moron.

I disagree partially with you yume, some people do so to seek notority. Take a look at any internet comic and you'll see places where they act immature just to increase their popularity or to futher character development. Immaturity online is often the case offline but this does not necessarily follow in all cases (there are closet cases, but I'm willing to concede this point).

Is immaturity for notority a bad thing, well in some cases as I said but not always. Who does it really hurt I wonder... depends. It is definately a pandemic, but it is something we as humans have learned to live with in the real-world since the beginning of time. I often question whether there is any difference, but on the whole I believe immaturity is often a self-inflicted disease =\

Yes Hellspire, I am aware of individuals and groups that actually join forums for the sole purpose of baiting people to provoke responses. They enjoy being able to raise heated arguments that bring the whole thread off-course and gaining notoriety for themselves in the process. These people are called trolls. In my book, such behaviour is immature too, unless they happen to be scientists researching internet psychology ;)

As I promised, more on this (my friend was around, and although I really wanted to reply, he'd laugh at what I would say).

It is VERY easy to be VERY mature or VERY immature on the internet. I am less mature in real life, simply because, although I generally am thinking how I type on here, in real life it usually comes out much simpler and/or less "intelligent".

I choose to be a more mature person on the internet, however most people my age (that still get their laughs off fart jokes..) that I know, generally just come on to be a nuisance/laugh at people. Heck, when my friend was over here, he spent the evening pretending to be a 54 year old on a site and laughing his ass off about it.

Ah, I have no clue where I'm going with this. I have other things to do (like study)
