Censorship is the cutting and editing of films/animes which may alter some meaning and this may cause the film to lose their initial value. Should there be censorship??

At first i was wondering if this was one of those overall censorship threads. No i dont believe in any sort of censorships. There is a reason why they put ratings and age restrictions on various things.

censorship is one of those things that we just need...like politicians..or presidents...what people consider okay and not okay varies greatly...so a set censorship will establish some sort of standard to follow

If it is taking something and censoring it for a different audience, no.
If it is censoring beforehand, its alright.

I say no, i can decide myself what i want to watch and not want to watch. Instead of censoring(however its spelled :P) its better to just put a warning with it that it has conent that may be expierenced as offensive to some people.

I'm "more no than yes". It's because even though I believe that soime things don't need editing, there are ocassions when they do. In America, the majority of people who watch anime are kids. We don't want to mess them up by having animated characters spew out an excess of blood or have animated nudity dance around their little heads. But there is were the censoring should end. Look at One Piece. It's a great anime but 4Kids totally ruined it for America by cutting out so many scenes and editing so many parts of the show. Much of it was unnessecary ( black dude turned white, lol). That's my point of view on this issue.

I doubt porygon's seizure inducing episode will be missed. It depends on what you think is a good outcome, whether the original piece even had any valuable meaning in the first place is a good question to ask.

The majority of censorship babbling I hear concerning the Anime industry is generally directed at the generic series that merely exist as hollow filler fanservice shows. If you look at a couple of the recent series, like the siscon series from last season, whose title escapes me because dime-a-dozen series never keep my attention for longer than the span of an average goldfish's memory, received a lot of criticism for the method of censorship used. Compared to recent forms of censorship (extra steam, hair, and other forms of easily meshed innate objects) its never been quite as intrusive as it has become now. But Kastoob's mention of questioning the core content quality in the first place really does seem pertinent to any discussion such as this. Most fanservice series are directed at the hardcore followers in the first place, with the censorship merely tempting and teasing them to buy the final published work. With that in mind it doesn't really matter the form of censorship used, as the final product is never changing blithering nonsense that people will still buy and ultimately be happy with (as previously showed from Haruhi's sales for the 2nd half of the series -__-).
Now if the censorship in question is dulling the words, opinions, or actions of a work that has some merit in the content well, I'd just like to direct you to a little song that I always have agreed with EF_WKwbueG8

Yes and no.
Different countries and cultures (and individuals) have different standards as to what is appropriate for children, so I can understand why some people would appreciate a 'kid-friendly' version of whatever.
But changing something to avoid explaining a simple cultural difference (e.g. replacing riceballs with hamburgers) is just silly.
And it would be nice to have the unedited version available for those of us who are adults and either don't have kids or want to decide for ourselves what is appropriate for our children.

Oh. I voted before I read your post. In general I'm against censorship.
But there are somethings that do need to be censored. For example, I believe the information on the exact blue prints and exact details on how to build a nuclear bomb SHOULD be censored. Letting people know the general idea is fine, but not a dummies guide that even an idiot can follow.
But for anime, Yes censorship. But in the form of ratings like Teen and Adult only.

Censorship is almost impossible. The main reason for this is different cultures have different opinions of what is offensive and what is suitable for the masses. This can also be brocken down to an individual level.
A crude example is what is the difference between Art and Pornography. Anyone can walk into a gallery and see a multitude of images depicting nudity, but that is ok as it is art. Yet pictures of naked men or womed in a magazine is seen to need sensorship. All this yet the subject matter is still the same. The denotation and conatations of many of the images remain the same as well. I know some people will say one is painted and one photographic but most art now comes in all formats. Anime is drawn or cg yet will come under the same laws. When computer game age restrictions were introduced, owing to an out cry from members of the public at the depication of blood in games, there was a concern that young chilldren would suddenly pick up chain saws and start hacking off limbs. When you now view these same games, doom, grand theft auto it seems almost comical, square pixels of blood every where. Yet we didnt see at the time an increase in violence from chilldren playing games. Yet this is my perception, and as was proved at the time other people thought it did warrent attention and thus the law was changed. You could write a thesis on the subject and someone will disagree with you no matter what your conclusion as sensorship is a matter of opinion
