View Full Version : Childhood Obesity/Weight Problems

We all know that each year more and more young people are overweight or obese. This is generally due to things like all the junk food we have these days, TV, etc. Heck, I run a website and think I am doing something worthy of my time by writing articles, pleasing the public, etc, however to the real world I am simply a teenager sitting infront of a computer gaining weight.
So, what do you think should be done to solve this problem? Tomorrow's society looks to be shaping up as a large amount of diabetics and overweight people.
Should amount of physical education ('gym') time in school be increased? Should all schools have a cafeteria that only serves healthy foods, as opposed to many schools allowing kids to bring their own lunches which could consist of a bag of chips and a chocolate bar? Should we simply leave kids alone?
Thoughts?

hmmm since i like swim for my school i like dont have that problem but a good way to stop that problem is 6000 yards in a 25 meter pool in 2-3 hours. Of course the problem starts from the person and unless that person changes his or her life style the problems cont really be solved.

So your view is that they should exercise more? Should exercise be mandatory?

I think it's the kids own choice, and the parents might want to do something about it.

It is difficult for some persons to just jump into exercise, i suggest walking everyday to get your body ready for exercise of just gradually increase the amount of time u spend walking each day.
If you have the time, go out and play a nice game of cricket or something.
If you are stuck at home get a wii and wale that controller around sure to get the blood flowing

So, pmaster4, you believe that children should just exercise? What incentive do they have to exercise?
pmaster4
Aug 15th, 2006, 03:23 PM
Well not necessarily exercise but be a bit more active. Some of us are generally big bonded because of genetics.
I think what exercise does is assist in the reduction of cholesterol in the body. I can't come up with an incentive sure it reduces cholesterol and reduces weight but there are pills out there that can do the same with allot less effort.
By being active the individual can enjoy themselves and also maintain good health

I think that kids should exercise more or be more active. I mean literally all they have to do is play with their friends. Also parents should stop bying the insane amounts of junk food or atleast put it in places where it isn't easily accesible to kids.
So, pmaster4, you believe that children should just exercise? What incentive do they have to exercise?
Their incentive should be, not looking like an elephant when they are 25.

Children shouldn't get used to eat a lot of [junk] food when they are little. Why? Because it turns into a habit or a vice, and as the others it is very hard to leave. When the kids are first born their parents would normally try their best to please the child by giving him anything he wants or overfeeding him for being so unsecure about "OMFG IS HE EATING ENOUGH?" and "WHAT DO I DO? HE'S CRYING. HE MIGHT WANT FOODZ". I spent my childhood being fat, and just recently, in the course of months, I lost massive weight. You don't need diets, exercise, pills, or tubes to lose weight, you just need to shut your mouth close for a second. Junk food is bad, but tempting -- eat only some. I would say I have... two or three bags of chips a week, and that's what I'm addicted to the most. Luckily, I lost obsession for chocolate already, and am not constantly drinking sodas: water does the same job just fine (yes, and you even save money). Although... there's this one alcoholic drink I can't refuse =P. My brother is addicted to Coca Cola, and I've seen him drinking nothing else since I can remember. (Neither of us exercise, either way)

OLO. Today's kids have money. In fact, I save a lot of money by not buying junk constantly. Then again, when I do buy junk food, it's not much. I have some self-control, allowing me to know when to stop.
Their incentive should be, not looking like an elephant when they are 25.
Yet, most of them give up and don't care. I luckily became *aware* I should eat less. Doing diet and exercise was like "Hell, I don't want to do that", and when I tried them, I became tired easily. That kind of thing is frustrating. In fact, I'm bad at running, yet good at walking. Bad at being at being stood up, but good at jumping. I'm bad at arms flection, but good at abdominals... etc. I suckz0r at soccer, but I'm decent at tennis. If you just happen to be bad at everything and hate it... exercising sucks.
Anyways, your body gets used to the things you eat, so have some will and make it get used to eat less. Eventually, it works.
Tested personally, in fact. D:

OMG Alister youre so right saying that people think we just pass our life on games when were in front of computers my parents constantly tell me to read becuz they thihnk i play. Since they ounce saw a documentary on FPS games (Shooting games) which said that we could become criminals and kill in schools and all this crap they think i m addicted i keep repeating them i am on a forum ( i talk to them mostly about the debate section which is the most serious :P) so they kinda believe and say yes and it all changes the next day i wont say i dont like Counter Strike in fact the only FPS game i play on comp and i play Resident Evil 4 and Tomb Raider those are the gun games that are gon change me in terrorist. Like its not enough that people tell me that i m terrorist becuz i m arab lol now they continue telling i m gon become terro becuz i play CS lol anw for the overweight thing i m not skinny but no fat i have a some fat but i play soccer every day 1 hour at least the thing is also to careful to what you eat cuz if you do exercise and just eat shit after you wont lose or get but if you want to lose do sports and dont eat or else a more radical way just go and do esthetics operation

Well its hard to say some people do have medical probs. its the same with thin ppl some just cant add muscle mass...
But i do think society should put more effort in controlling weight or make it mantitory for students to do gym till grade 12 and meet canadian or usa physical standards
lavendar

We can't leave them alone. Humans are driven by wants, none more so than children. I'm overweight mine caused by medical issues in recent years that left me disabled. Even eating healthy you gain weight when all your allowed to do is sit but I've always had to struggle with mine. I think gym should be something that's done every day. Healthy foods should be offered but no one can force anyone to have to eat a school lunch. It's just not going to be followed and in these days of overcrowding there's no way to accomidate that number of students in teh budget or space and time wise. I watch what my son eats carefully, play with him as much as I'm capable of and have assistance from people more capable than me to make sure he stays active. Does he get junk food -yes but I watch how much and of what. Does he watch a lot of tv. sure does mostly educational programs. The point is to restrict the amounts and types of what's eaten and balance it with healthy foods, habits and activity. I'm happy to say my son stays medically on target all of the time but it requires considerable effort. Now a days with parents who work 40+ hours a day in two income homes the time just isn't there. It takes me about 3 hrs or so a day of time to watch, cook, prepare healthy foods. I don't work so I have that much free time each day to do that. Also have you noticed in the stores healthy foods are usually more expensive making it harder for economically challenged people to eat healthy, kind of backwards isn't it.

If u guys have Discovery Channel (travel and Living) there is a program by a chef- Jamie Oliver the show is called Oliver Twist, he's a british chef who's done some program for schools cafeteria, he went to the Health Ministry and propose a change of diet for school children, the program was first a failure but still manage to kick some sense to some schools.
Jamie was frustrated and i think the program is still on, don't know what happen recently, the program was last year.
whatever it is, it's hard to educate children to eat healty diet, but parents should have some control on that and society as a whole should aware of the situation and maybe ban too high sugar junk food or too salty stuff and what not.

There's 3 types of body type , endomorph, mesomorph and i forgot the other one, endomorph tends to burn calories faster due to their high metabolism however mesomorph works the opposite way with low metabolism, the two are different and diet and exercise also differs.
endo guys - less cardio workout but more weight training eats whatever the hell he wants
meso guys - more cardio less weight training must eat less carb, low calorie diet
So thats a tip for guys/gals who wish to do some resizing on their bodies, good luck

hee, i am fat. ok...not OBESE, but fat. And when i work out, things change. I can slim down...i dont know if i'll ever be SKINNY, because i have never been SKINNY, but i can get fit and pretty trim (which is good because i love my boobs too much). I think that kids today are too lazy. Too many hershey bars and PSPs and not enough running around. I can say it for a fact because i am one of those lazy-assed kids. And i am a product of my laziness.
this makes me want to go to the gym...
Mmm... Exercise being mandatory would help.
But parents need to help too, they need to set limits, and make their kids go outside, seriously.

I was always skinny to skinny when i look back at how i was when i was younger, only weighed 100-114 through most my school years(also was 5,10") till grade 12 when i took up weight lifting, now im 153-159 and my overall strength has increased emencely to where i bench and lift more then i way with ease.
Well we can all agree there are plenty of ways to lose weight or even gain , some better then others and much funner. Dieting being one of the worse ways if done incorrectly"to mainy ppl just not eating and callin it dieting these days...."
kinda funny how this thread became about DDR lmao :p but still relevant to obesity/weight problems

I eat a lot of junk food, but I'm on the slim side. Just because you're skinny doesn't necessarily mean you're healthy. Eating too much candy and drinking to much soda can doesn't just cause obesity but low bone density, high blood sugar which could leed to diabeties, not to mention cavities.

i even LOOK at a donut and i gain 10 lbs. I have always had to watch what i ate because i could gain weight so easily, its doesn't help that my asian shortness makes every pound look like 50. I know how hard it is for kids these days to refuse the temptation of a snickers bar, but i honestly think if kids are active, even just playing DDR, that will be integral in stopping the spread of childhood obesity.

you also have to take the genetics view on it. the majority of morbidly obese kids are so because either their mother or father were fat. they should be made aware of these risks and should be given special gym classes to reduce their risk of becoming the next homer simpson or peter griffin

i think its okay to feed the child with a lot of food, but not junk food, Junk Food will make them lazy and they will sleep which is not good after a meal. Let them play and exercise, even running around in circle playing catch me if you can is good enough. you have to sweat to burn all the calories.

All death is essentially preventable or postponable... When I'm 80 I could have transplants for all my organs and live longer. People die in car accidents, if they didn't drive they wouldn't die, etc.

They made DDR for the sole purpose of making excersize fun and to get people moving, it actually did work a bit, I have alot of friends who are on the over-ish side ^^;; and they all are in love with DDR and they play every week o.0;
People will do it if you make it fun =D

it's not that hard to lose fat(not exactly weight, more like fat). i mean sure it takes a while but it gets done. just do like 10-30 minutes of strenuous workout a day(like muscle building and the such, not just running; i forget what they're called) and you'll increase your metabolism for like a whole day, that seriously helps. people say its ahrd to build a habit, but just do it for like 20 days straight, and in all seriousness it becomes an easy habit.

LOL, I agree. Obesity (I think) is the number one cause of preventable death in America. smoking is the second. Especially here in New York City, smokers are heckled all the time, with people saying things like "What the hell's the matter with you? Don't you realize you're wasting your money on some fucking cancer sticks?" and to my surprise a lot of the time the person would respoond by saying "Yeah I know... I tried quitting once, it just didn't work out" instead of saying something like "Who the fuck are you? Shut the fuck up man it's none of your god damn business." (as I would expect him to). If it's become publicly acceptable to heckle smokers because it's the #2 cause of preventable death, why wouldn't it be publicly acceptable to heckle the obese when obesity is the #1 cause of preventable death?

and ive seen plenty of fat ladys at target that smoke, then i think smokeing helping you loose weight? could this be a myth?
Smoking reduces your appetite, thus technically you would eat less. This is why some people say it helps lose weight.

So wheezing, yellow teeth and a black lung is better than being unnattractive?
Smoking was a device created so people had a social topic out in the cold.

Fat people are funny.
They waddle.
They roll.
As smokers look like faggots.

Haha True that. Ya.. Smoking Sucks...
Well yes I think like smoking... being fat is a choice (unless if you are genetically prone to be a freaking 380 pound linebacker) Yes.. Its just.. calories in vs. calories out.. But yes.. I have a hollow leg so none of this applies to me. Being underweight sucks.. I'm like 145 and 5'11. Screw life.

There are factors that determine whether someone is fat. Definitely the amount that they exercise is a large factor, however there are others. No one's metabolism is the same, regardless of whether they exercise. You can still see people who can eat a 20oz steak and not gain a pound, and see people that eat a french fry and gain 10 pounds (almost literally).
Most overweight people of course don't always make the healthiest choices when it comes to eating, however it isn't necessarily that they are choosing to gain weight, it may be that regardless of what they eat, be it a carrot or a french fry, they gain weight.
