View Full Version : Taking the Internet too Seriously
I've only been active on the internet for a good 2 years, but in those two years, I've met a great deal of people, who experience e-drama, for gamers, it's always the complaining of being called a noob, since when did the internet throw you back 10 years of maturity?
Do you think people take it too seriously nowadays?
I mean, even the police take it horribly serious, i.e. MySpace incidents.
Discuss?

On other news, what do you mean by "seriously"? The trolls don't take it seriously and are 10 years back on maturity.
So, elaborate?

i agree with kimeru, there's a lot of intrepretation on serious, do you mean in business term or whatever, please clarify
Most people on the internet get into fights and crap over trivial games and such.
Or forum fights and crap.
They get so engrossed sometimes that they experience e-drama with friends they make over the internet, I lol @ those people.
I guess I just mean the people who are on more than 3 hours a day. (not all, as I am on for much longer, just most)

now i see, you mean that internet should not be reality like? because nothing beat kissing your girlfriend live than sending kisses by ym or such. i got your point.
its so true that nowadays we are too emotionally attach to the internet, just take 10 years ago nobody heard of wedding true internet or virtual romance. thats the way it goes sometimes when new tech is introduce.
for me i like the old fashion way of doing things, if i dislike somebody, i swear in front of the guy rather than sending email with anynomous address or propose to my girlfriend to be my wife via email or over the phone. better take her out for a candle light dinner and put the ring in the cake or something, but make sure she doesn't eat the ring
Why have an emotional attachment to the internet?
It makes no sense, for the majority of the people who do take it seriously.

Yet another enlightening comment by the ever-popular skyline :)
Look, no matter where you go, be it virtual or otherwise, you are going to find "drama." People equate situations online to similar instances in real life (i.e. arguments via chat or forum, fights in online games, etc.) It's the same reason people get upset when playing sports or debating a topic - it's competition. Some people just deal with it differently than others.
And it's not just the internet that's thrown back maturity levels, it's society as a whole. No one has to take responsibility for their actions anymore. But I'll stop there at risk of digression from the topic.
Yes, the internet is taken too seriously. And encompassing that is the fact that people take LIFE too seriously.

Your joke is not lost on me in relation to the question but I regard this as spam.
I just think that because we are even discussing it means it is being taken too seriously.

And some others who should get their fingers cut just for touching a keyboard. No, I didn't mean you, but there are.

Idiots are idiots and will always find a medium to annoy others with. I'm pretty sure prank phone calls were very popular 30 years ago, here.
As for the people who goes "dis guy calld me a n00b, i r no n00b i haev +lvl10 armorrs n teh ultimate staff. n he calld me n00b! he calld me jn00b! HES THE N00B." "...STFU or GTFO, n00b", 70% of the online gamers are helplessly stupid.
I agree that online gamers are the worst.
I'll just give them something to chew on like, "cry more," or ,"make more excuses, I love to see god cry."

I am part of the Matrix...
Friends can definitely be made on the internet. Are they true friends? I'd say so. For example, I talk to Hellspire enough that I would consider him a friend. Will I ever meet him? Unlikely, though possible. Does that make him a true friend, if I may never meet him? I'd say so. Communication is communication. One's physical being does not make friendship - it is one's mental being that does so. Your mental being exists in real life, on the phone, or on the internet. When you have a friendship, it is between mental beings, not physical (or else I wouldn't consider it a friendship).
People say if you like a girl just for their body, then you're shallow - you should like their mind (personality, etc). How is this any different on the internet?

Alister i think your taking this to serious now, first off, Alister your going into new subjects, its almost like your saying, hey the internet is better than real life, people are not judged by what they look like but how they think, But if more people thought like this there wouldnt be much , umm whats the word for this. social contact, no more true dating, and alot of stuff would end if we totaly turned the internet into a life style.
The internet can be a part of your life, but it cant be your life

I think that if you're not at least 1% attracted, the relationship might fail or be hard to start. Then again, the events in Shallow Hal could always happen... XD;

People who say they like someone for their personality and not their looks are bullshitters. Everyone wants to be with someone that they think is beautiful.

I would have to disagree. Most of the time it is the “hey I think you’re cute and you think I’m cute so let’s date,” thing, but I think that liking someone for their personality is possible.

nothing beats love at first sight, of course you can only find it maybe once in a lifetime or maybe never, personality is second when you see a person and your heart beating fast and you sweat and in awe. sorry a bit off topic.

Though this is certainly a digression from the initial comment, I am compelled to share my opinion on this subject.
In my opinion, there are three encompassing factors in a relationship - The Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual factors. I believe that every aspect in a relationship can be broken into one (or two or all) of these three categories.
The Physical attraction is usually necessary for the initial attraction. In some cases (this medium, for example) a person can be attracted to personality rather that physical attributes, but at some point in a relationship physical contact must be made.
The Emotional aspect can be otherwise defined as the compatibily between mental ideas and personalities. This is where trust and commitment apply, and where attachments are usually the strongest.
The Spiritual aspect is an ambiguous term, but I define it as the natural, unexplainable feelings between people. Some people use the term "chemistry," or for romantic types the "fate" influence.
In any relationship, these three aspects must have a balance. If you have too much or too little of any of these, than the relationship becomes unstable. If anyone is interested I will continue later on how each of these aspect fits into various Phases of a relationship, but this is getting long-winded even for me ;).

Did I say hot girls don't have minds?
I suppose this didn't come across through my post, however I wasn't *really* speaking about dating, more about interaction with others through the internet.. friendship, etc.
You say it wouldn't be good if no one cared about how others looked? That would effectively end all racism and a large amount of other hate.
I never said that physical attraction was not necessary for a relationship to succeed, I merely said it is not the most important thing. Love at first sight is not love, it can only be lust. You cannot love what you do not know, seen?

It's partially dealing with internet dating, in some way, which is a part of taking internet seriously. If you don't like it, go ahead and get it back in track, since you are the thread starter.
(Furthermore, another topic was born in a thread that didn't make much sense)
