Well, after reading about Rockstar's new game and the controversy surrounding its release, I thought I would give it a try.
In terms of gameplay it was certainly entertaining, with all the pranks and hijinks that I always dreamt of enacting in my schoolyard days. The look and feel is similar to GTA, which is understandable due to the shared company. The entire experience was enjoyable, even the optional missions such as lawnmowing and racing bikes and go-karts. However, I can see where the controversy comes in.
There are certain aspects of the game that surprised me, such as the option of fighting with weapons like lengths of wood and pipe. Also, the availabilty of weapons like firecracker launchers and "spud" (potato) cannons made me raise my eyebrows a bit. I'm not saying that this is a bad influence or anything; I've always been a firm believer in parental guidance and observation with videogames. I just think it's a bit of a stretch to incorporate these kind of things into this particular videogame and still maintain the believability of the scenarios.
Stepping away from that point, I think what I appreciated most about this game was the jabs at some of the societal issues we have in our world today. Options such as bribing a student to help you beat up your next target, story sequences involving sexual harassment and alcohol (and that's not just the students), and corruption with law enforcement all make an appearance. This, plus the inclusion of stereotypes and cliques round out an intriguing look at some of the biggest problems with our social and moral values.
I wouldn't recommend shelling out the forty bucks unless you are truly interested in the game, though. I managed to beat the main storyline in about ten hours of gameplay, and I'm at ninety-percent completion after only fifteen hours.
Overall, I give it a 6/10
